My love of all things radio began as a teenager with a myriad of police scanners, walkie-talkies, and a 40 channel base-station with a mobile antenna stuck to the roof of the house. I did not have a large antenna to add reciprocal gain, so I learned "sideband" and "skip" to increase contact distances. I trained in the United States Army as a 31 Victor, tactical communications systems operator/mechanic. I learned radio electronics, installation, troubleshooting, and military protocol for radio operation. I did not choose this hobby, it chose me. I am into DXing and will never allow radio to become "work."
